The Solway Harvester

An unexpected, and very poignant, sight in Douglas Harbour was the wreck of the Solway Harvester, the fishing boat from Whithorn, Scotland that sank with all hands off Man in January 2000.

It seems incredible that the vessel, salvaged as part of the investigations (including an unsuccesful manslaughter case) should still be here, six years later.

There's more on this on the podcast - where you can hear Captain Carter's commentary - he explains that she is still here pending the final inquest - which should be soon. The podcast has excerpts from Ellen Vannin, the Hughie Jones' famous song about a Manx shipwreck - for more details on that song, and Hughie, click here.

Postscript:
On Thursday, walking on Douglas Head, we came across this memorial, a thank you from the people of Whithorn to the people of Man for their compassion and generosity.
