Saturday lectures - all about Manx Heritage
Some background lectures on Manx Heritage, kicked off by Andrew Foxon of Manx National Manx National Heritage (MNH), the combined IoM Government/Charitable Trust that looks after everything. MNH covers built and natural heritage, is responsible for all heritage and natural data, site designations and some key sites.
Remember – IoM is not part of the UK, or even the EU, so there’s a lot of differences: Site designations are similar to the UK, but different in detail – there are Listed Ancient Monuments, Registered Buildings, Areas of Special Scientific Interest etc – and legislation is often significantly different – no space to go into that here though.
MNH own and manage 13 main sites of their own, including the ‘flagship’ Great Laxey Mine (more on this later) and Peel Castle, Cregneash Village etc. The second Andrew of the day, Andrew Johnson, outlined all these sites and their key features – we’ll be seeing many of them later in the week.
Starting with Great Laxey Mine (some are going there tomorrow) – details of which were presented by Andrew #3 – Andrew Scarffe, who has worked on and researched the area extensively – his book on the site is highly acclaimed (see links below). Again very difficult to summarise here – but basically we’re talking about a series of metal mines, centred on Glenmore, off the Laxey valley to the north of Douglas. Here, to provide power for pumping, winding and for a man-engine a huge (72’6”) waterwheel was used – this is the famous Laxey Wheel, one of the best-known landmarks of Man. The size would have been to get enough power from a relatively small stream, and the wheel was situated some distance from the shafts, transmitting power by rods on top of a viaduct.
But there’ll be more on this when we visit, so that’s all for now. Except for links to the books. Andrew Scarffe’s The Great Laxey Mine’ is available here or here and MNH have just published (this week) a new edition of their ‘Industrial Archaeology of the Isle of Man’ – ISBN 0-901106-54-2 – probably not on the booksellers lists yet.
Today's podcast covers bits of last night and this morning...
